AmeriCorps Milk and Rice Drive a SUCCESS!!
On Saturday, May 30, 2015, the CNMI-PSS AmeriCorps teams from San Vicente Elementary School and Dandan Middle School combined forces and held their 1st Milk and Rice Drive at the front of Payless Supermarket in Susupe. All food items collected from this drive will benefit Karidat Social Services.
The AmeriCorps teams are grateful to all the donors who made this drive a true success. We would also like to to thank the staff and management of Payless Supermarket for their gracious hospitality in allowing our members to hold this food drive in front of their store. THANK YOU and KUDOS to Payless Supermarket and the truly wonderful donors who gave so generously of their bounty!! Below is AmeriCorps Member Catherine Cabalquinto’s story of that day:
Last Saturday’s Milk & Rice Drive for Karidat was, in my opinion, a big success! We arrived at the drive’s site at about 7:40 and had everything set up before 8. After setting up, we began asking people to help the AMC members donate rice and milk to Karidat. We did not let anyone pass us by without a flyer or without us asking them to donate. There was actually a point where we almost ran out of flyers because of all the people we asked! ![:)]()
After we began our quest for donations, people started coming out of the store with boxes of milk or even a sack of rice! Some people donated canned goods and bowls of noodles. We (the ACM) were so touched at how many people were helping us and Karidat. Some people were so nice and gave us both a sack of rice and a plastic bag full of milk ![:)]()
We even met prior AmeriCorps members who were intrigued and proud of all that we have done to help our community. Some people gave money which was immediately spent to buy more milk, rice and canned goods. About 123 dollars was received and immediately spent on getting additional food items.
We started to clean up at around 4:30 pm. Mr. Reo (our Dandan Middle School Site Supervisor) came and helped us pack all the donations onto his truck. All in all we were done by 5:00 pm. We had collected over 300 pounds of rice, milk and other food items this drive.
I’m glad that we are able to return to Karidat with an abundance of things that they are in need of, and I look forward to next Saturday’s drive. I would also like to thank everyone who helped and donated to us through out this drive. CC/SVS AmeriCanaries

The next AmeriCanary and AmeriTottot Rice & Milk Drive will be held this coming Saturday, June 06th, 2015, from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. It will be in front of the Payless Supermarket in Susupe. If you are out and about town, please do drop by to help those most in need in our community with some milk and rice that you can spare from your pantry. Thank you and see you there!!!
